England at the Euros

England are the most successful of the Home Nations, having made it to the UEFA European Championship finals no less than ten times in fifteen tournaments. They didn’t enter the first time around in 1960, and failed to qualify in 1964, 1972, 1976 and 2008.

They famously reached the final in Euro2020 (held in 2021), only to lose on penalties against Italy at Wembley. Their other memorable run was also on home soil, when they reached the semi-finals in 1996, only to lose on penalties again, this time to Germany.

England have had the most games against Home Nations opposition, playing Scotland twice (one win in 1996, one draw in 2020), Wales (won in 2016) and the Republic of Ireland (lost in 1980).

Scotland at the Euros

Scotland have made it to the Euro finals three times, in 1992, 1996 and 2020, but have yet to make it out of the group stage. They have only won twice at the finals, with a 3-0 win against the Soviet Union in 1992 (or the Commonwealth of Independent States as it was known at the time), and a 1-0 win against Switzerland at Euro96.

Wales at the Euros

Wales did not qualify for the Euro finals until 2016, despite trying every year since 1964. However, when they did finally make it, they had a remarkable run. The 2016 tournament saw Wales beat Northern Ireland and Belgium on their way to the semi-finals, only to be beaten by eventual tournament winners Portugal 2-0. They were beaten by England in the group stage, 2-1, but progressed anyway.

Northern Ireland at the Euros

The smallest of the Home Nations have not exactly covered themselves with glory, reaching the finals just once, in 2016. They were beaten by Poland and Germany, but beat Ukraine 2-0, before being eliminated by neighbours Wales 1-0 in the round of 16.

The Republic of Ireland at the Euros

The Republic have made it to the Euro finals three times, in 1988, 2012 and 2016, but have only won there twice in ten attempts. That said, one of those victories was against the mighty Italy in 2016, winning 1-0 with an 85th minute goal. The other was against England in 1988, again winning 1-0.

Their other campaign, in 2012, was rather less successful, matching the record for the worst ever performance by a team, with three straight losses and a goal difference of minus 8.

Who has qualified for Euro 2024?

At the time of writing, just nine of the twenty four teams have been confirmed for the 2024 finals. However, the good news for Euros football predictor players is that both England and Scotland are amongst them.

As for the remaining home nations teams, Wales probably have the best chance of making it through after their victory over Croatia in October. Armenia and Turkey stand in their way of getting to Germany next summer.

Just two wins from eight games leaves Northern Ireland floundering just above tiny San Marino in Group H. Even a dramatic change of fortune will not be enough to get them through. The Republic of Ireland are also floundering near the bottom of Group B and are out of contention.
